Transfer to the Junior School
Transfer from St John’s Infants to St John’s Junior School is automatic; parents are not required to apply for a place. In preparation for transfer to the Junior School, Year 2 pupils visit the Junior School near the end of the summer term. The teachers at the Junior School also spend some time with the year 2 children in their infant classrooms. Year 2 and Year 3 teachers liaise during the summer term to ensure that all relevant information is handed over. For some pupils, an enhanced transition may be necessary. This is usually arranged by the SENDcos from both schools.
Parents are also given the opportunity to visit the Junior School, and to attend a parents meeting in the summer term. The meeting is an information sharing meeting where parents will also have the opportunity to see their child’s classroom, meet the class teacher and ask any further questions.
The two schools meet at different events and Church services throughout the year, and therefore most children will become familiar with the Junior School staff and building. The staff from both schools regularly liaise over the curriculum and also join together for training at times.

Secondary School Transition
When choosing a secondary school, it can often seem like a daunting task for both parents and pupils. Here at St John’s Junior School, we want to make sure that we are here with you every step of the way when making these important decisions for your child’s next step in their education. Below are some top tips that we believe will help make the choice that little bit easier.
∙ Visit the schools you are considering sending your child to where possible or make use of the virtual tours available on the secondary school websites.
If you have relatives or family friends who attend the school, speak to them about what the school has to offer
Visit the school website, they will have lots of information about the facilities they offer and what learning takes place.
Where possible, arrange a school tour, it is often useful to visit during the school day.
Discuss with your child their likes and dislikes about schools- an open conversation is important.
Always put the maximum number of choices down when filling out the parental preference form.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch with the Year 6 teachers or Mrs Mullins if you are unsure of the process and would like any extra guidance.
Before your child leaves St John’s, we will prepare them as best we can for the change. We promote a positive mindset through our Thinking and Learning Powers so that the children feel ready to tackle this next stage in their education. Through our PHSE curriculum, in the Summer term, we prepare the children for transition. We cover themes such as organisation, worries, conflict, safety, peer pressure, friendships and building new relationships. Enhanced transition visits are also planned for any children who require this extra support.
